Beausejour, Carriacou, March 11th, 2014- Commonwealth Day 2014 was celebrated on the twin isle parish of Carriacou and Petite Martinique with much fan fare as the Queen Baton arrived via plane here and passed through all the main villages on the island.

Students of the various primary and secondary schools and residents lined the streets to get a glimpse of the Baton which holds Queen Elizabeth’s message for the Commonwealth Games.

A welcome ceremony was held in the town of Hillsborough where aspects of the island’s rich cultural heritage were displayed.

Outstanding cricketer Emmanuel Stewart and players of the Carriacou under 19 cricket team led the relay around the town; which also included athletes from Bishop’s College, Hillsborough Secondary and Hillsborough Government School.

Guardian of the Baton Alister Cameron said with 1/3 of the Commonwealth being youths, the bringing of the baton to the 71 nations is significant; as it signifies that while the Commonwealth is made up of a diverse group of nations; they are united.
The Baton also travelled to the sister isle of Petite Martinique where it was met by students of the Petite Martinique RC School and to end the day’s event a race was held on the grounds of the newly rehabilitated playing field.

President of the Grenada Commonwealth Games Association Royston La Hee and a delegation which included Fortuna Belrose- Regional Vice President for the Caribbean Commonwealth Games Federation along with officials of the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs shared in the historic moment.

The Queen Baton now travels to neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago.

The Commonwealth Games takes place in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23rd- August 3rd, 2014.
