ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, SUNDAY, MARCH 9, 2014 -
A High powered government delegation comprising four ministers rushed into Gouyave Sunday to lend support and assistance, hours after members of the Smith family lost their homes as a result of a fire on Saturday night.

The four Government ministers were accompanied by representatives from the Ministry of Social Development and Housing, the National Disaster Management Authority (NaDMA), Grenada Red Cross and the Catholic Community of St. John on their trip into Gouyave on Sunday afternoon.

The meeting was a quick response demonstrating Governments’ support and commitment towards assisting the fire victims with their immediate needs such as food, clothing, shelter and medicine.

During Sunday's meeting Parliamentary Representative for St. John - Hon. Alvin Dabreo pledged Government’s support towards meeting the immediate needs of the family.

Dabreo told the meeting that the Country’s leader, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Mitchell, and his entire Government are deeply saddened by the tragedy and reassured the fire victims that assistance is being mobilized to aid in their comfort.

According to the St. John’s M.P, he has personally discussed the hosting of a special radio-ton with WEEFM radio to be held early next week to assist with the relief effort.

Social Development Minister Hon. Delma Thomas who also empathized with the Smith’s, conveyed Government's commitment towards helping them rebuild their lives.

Minister Thomas asked the fire victims to submit the name and age of the children and adults that may require special and immediate assistance.

“I know for a fact that the Gouyave Community in New York was mobilizing to assist you and I was asked to convey that message to you. So whatever medical assistance and so on that is of immediate need will be forthcoming”, Minister Thomas told the tragedy-stricken relatives.

Apart from the presence of Minister with responsibility for ICT Alvin Dabreo and Delma Thomas the Minister for Social Development and Housing, the other two Ministers of Government attending Sunday’s meeting were Minister responsible for Information Senator Winston Garraway and Senator Sheldon Scott, the Junior Minister in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Religious Affairs.

Meanwhile Father Andrew Barnard - Parish Priest for the Catholic Community and officials from (NaDMA), the New National Party Welfare Association, and the Grenada Red Cross are collaborating with Government to assist the fire victims.

Saturday’s fire has disrupted the lives of 17 members of the Smith family, whom today are counting their losses as result of the tragedy.
