Beausejour, Carriacou, June 16, 2014-Significant progress is being made on the setting up of two reverse osmosis water systems for Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

Work is now in progress on the construction of the photovoltaic systems-solar power plants which will generate the electricity to power the systems.

Environment Economist Mark Bynoe of the CARICOM Climate Change Centre is working along with the Ministry of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs to ensure the successful implementation of the plants. He said that they will each produce 150 kilowatts per hour of electricity.

The plants are being set up on lands opposite the Limlair Livestock Station. Bynoe noted that when the reverse osmosis systems are up and running that there will be a water distribution cost to consumers.

The project which is costing in the region of US$2.1m is being funded by the European Union Global Alliance for Climate Change Program and the United Kingdom Department of International Development.

Climate Change and Environment Advisor for the United Kingdom Department of International Development Simone Banister was part of a team who recently visited the island to get a progress report. She said it is one of their priority areas in terms of climate change adaptation in the region.

Support for the project is also being received from the Grenada Electricity Services (GRENLEC) and the National Water and Sewage Authority (NAWASA).

Already the building which will be used for the treatment centre is completed; it was constructed on the site of the old desalination plant in Seaview while the one in Petite Martinique will be close to the health centre.
