Prime Minister Mitchell visits Montreal

On Friday, June 6, 2014, approximately 300 Grenadians living in Montreal welcomed with pleasure the Prime Minister of the tri-island nation of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, Dr. the Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell, and his Grenadian delegation of senior government officials.


The delegation included Hon. Dr. Claris Modest-Curwen, Minister of Health and Social Services and Mr. Peter David, Senior Advisor to the Prime Minister. Also accompanying the Prime Minister was Honorary Consul General for Grenada in Canada, Mrs. C.J. Augustine-Kanu.


Two full days were planned for the Delegation from June 5 – 6th headed by the Honorary Consul for Grenada in Montreal, Mr. Leonard Wharwood Jr. Upon arrival the Prime Minister was interviewed by Global Montreal television at a luncheon held in his honor.


The PM and Hon. Dr. Modeste-Curwen were privileged to visit the new state of the art super MUHC hospital in Montreal on the Glen site expecting a 2015 opening date. Dr. Modest-Curwen was able to start negotiations to receive some of the medical equipment from the five hospitals which will be closing.


The Minister of Health also visited two medical clinics while in Montreal and made wonderful contacts in support of sustaining the Men’s and Women’s clinics in Grenada.


On Friday, June 6, The Delegation addressed Nationals and Friends of Grenada on important issues related to the national developments within the nation and opportunities for Diaspora partnership.

Grenadians in Montreal took the town hall meeting as an opportunity to engage with the Prime Minister and his delegation. Those gathered at the Centre Communautaire Cote-Des-Nieges came armed with questions and pertinent commentary on issues affecting the tri-island state. Among the evenings highlights were a cultural presentation by the Grenada Ensemble, the launch of a literacy project to benefit primary schools in Grenada and the oil down supper which was served up at the end of the evening’s proceedings.


The PM and his delegation expressed delight at the turnout and level of engagement that they encountered among Grenadians in Montreal.

To the delight of the delegation, a typical Grenadian luncheon was served at the newly opened Dejeuneur Caraibe “Le Spot” Restaurant on Victoria Street. “It is like being at home”, said the Prime Minister after enjoying his meal and putting his stamp of approval on the wall of the Restaurant.


he Grenadian delegation also visited New York, NY (USA) and Toronto, Ontario in Canada.
