ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, JULY 14, 2014 – GIS: The Ministry of Health will take its fogging campaign to St. Andrew this week. Last Monday the Ministry’s Vector Control Department launched the fogging campaign which health officials described as an aggressive attack against the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which is said to be the vector responsible for the spread of the Chikungunya virus.

The island-wide fogging operation is part of a broader effort to reduce the high incidence of mosquito infestation. While fogging is considered a secondary option in reducing the mosquito population, health officials says the number one priority of individuals should and must be keeping their surroundings clean and reducing breeding sites such as old tires, tins, coconut shells, blocked drains and other water holding containers.

The areas to be fogged are as follows;

Tuesday 15th July – Mirebeau and its environs

Wednesday 16th July – Grand Bras and its environs

Thursday 17th July – the Town of Grenville and its
environs.

The ongoing fogging operation will commence at 5:00:pm daily at all locations.

Health officials are also seeking the public’s cooperation to ensure the effectiveness of the fogging campaign by opening up doors and windows thus allowing the fog to enter and kill the mosquitoes.

A special appeal is also being made for persons with respiratory difficulties to stay away from the fog or inform the fogging team of their health conditions. The fogging teams are also seeking Aviary farmers and Bee keepers support to avoid possible disruption in the exercise.

Meanwhile there has been no outbreak of the virus on mainland Grenada. However, the Ministry of Health continues to exert all efforts to control and minimize the spread of the virus on the sister isle. The Vector Control Division can be reached on telephone number 440-2095.
