Launch of Food and Nutrition Programme at St. Michael’s R.C. School

ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, Tuesday, January 21, 2014 – GIS: In the continued effort to promote food and nutrition security within the context of the Zero Hunger Challenge, while focusing on educating and developing a strong base among the youth, the Ministry of Agriculture will Launch the Grenada Food and Nutrition Security FAO Sponsor Training/Demonstration Programme on January 23, 2014 from 2 p.m to 4.00 p.m at the St. Michael’s R. C. School, Byelands, St. Andrew.

The purpose of this training is to seek to strengthen the local economy by promoting locally grown produce amount youth, while simultaneously showcasing entrepreneurially minded youth in the agricultural sector and beyond. This will contribute to eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition.

The following objectives are set for 2014 activities;

Increase agricultural production skills among the target groups particularly focusing on vegetable production systems, quality planting materials, plant nutrition, integrated pest management and climate smart agriculture.
Introduce the save and grow and climate smart agriculture systems to participants.

Stimulate the consumption/utilization of local foods towards improving the nutrition situation within home environment.
Promote agricultural production as a means of earning income and a livelihood option.

The vision of Grenada Food and Nutrition Security Policy is to fully recognize the right to Food and to ensure that all Grenadians, at all times, have physical, economic, and social access to safe, nutritious, culturally acceptable, and affordable food in sufficient quantities to meet their dietary needs for an active and healthy life.

Hence, the Ministry of Agriculture, Land, Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has taken a deliberate policy decision to launch a Zero Hunger Challenge Initiative.

This initiative was officially unveiled by Her Excellency Dr. Dame Cecil La Grenada Governor General of Grenada on the October 16th, 2013 in the presence of the Honourable Roland Bhola, Minister of Agriculture, Land, Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Members of Parliament; Members of the Diplomatic Core; Permanent Secretaries in the respective Ministries; Representatives from International Agricultural Agencies (FAO); Members of the community of Non-Governmental Organizations and of the Private Sector; other Senior Officers of Government; farmers and members of the media.
