ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, April 15, 2014 – GIS:
The Grenada government says preparations are well underway for the renaming of the Botanical Gardens after the country’s first Prime Minister, Sir Eric Matthew Gairy.

Social Development Minister Hon. Delma Thomas has announced that a team of local and international volunteers will soon begin upgrading the Gardens.

“We will have a group of volunteers, international volunteers, who will be joining our local persons, students from TAMCC, in helping to revitalize the whole area to make it an attractive site as we recognize the tremendous contribution that Sir Eric Mathew Gairy made to Grenada,” Thomas announced during Tuesday’s post cabinet news briefing.

“Our father of independence, he was our first prime Minister and he has done a lot for our country and we must recognize what he has done.”

The renaming of the Gardens is a government initiative to honour Sir Eric, who led the country to independence in 1974.
