St. George’s, Grenada, June 19, 2011 – Tourism Minister Peter David has reiterated the support of his ministry and that of the Grenada Board of Tourism (GBT) for an annual cycle race that was held here last weekend.

The two-day Greens Annual Father’s Day Bicycle Race, which was contested in eight categories, involved cyclists from Grenada and several neighbouring Caribbean countries.

Mr. David, in addressing participants at a closing ceremony at the netball courts at Queen’s Park on Sunday, said the race is now part of the calendar of events of the GBT.

“This race is an excellent avenue for reviving cycling in Grenada and also another opportunity for boosting Grenada’s tourism,’’ said the Minister, who also distributed trophies to participants ranging from tiny mites to master seniors.

Mr. David paid tribute to Eric Benjamin, chief organizer of the race, which was designed as a “fun, sport, fitness and education’’ event for fathers and their families.

The cycling closing ceremony was one of five stops on a busy Sunday schedule for Mr. David, who is Member of Parliament for the Town of St. George.

He also visited the site at Sans Souci where government has supplied materials and rebuilding has begun on two homes that were recently destroyed by fire.

Mr. David and the Town of St. George Constituency Group also hosted a luncheon for residents of the Mental Home, and he attended a Father’s Day fundraising and cultural event at the St. George’s Methodist School.

In addition, the Tourism Minister joined members of the media at a service at the St. George’s Baptist Church in Springs, as the Media Workers Association of Grenada began its 2011 observance of Media Week.
