ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA, July 26, 2011: In June 2010, the Customs and Excise Division of the Ministry of Finance launched the commencement of the implementation of the ASYCUDA World IT System. This is an Automated System for Customs Data which will allow the Customs and their clients to handle most of their transactions, from Customs Declarations to Cargo Manifests and Transit documents, via the internet.
This innovation will improve service to the general public by reducing the time taken to clear goods from the Port and will also facilitate trade by strengthening Customs’ Administration Operational Capacity through modern and reliable systems
In this regard, the Customs and Excise Division will officially launch the Electronic Cargo Manifest Module of ASYCUDA World on Wednesday July 27th 2011 (tomorrow) at the Public Workers’ Union Conference Room at 10:00 a.m. Live streaming of the launch will start at 9:45 am at the following address: customs.gov.gd/asycudalaunch.php
This event will give potential users the opportunity to observe the process of accessing the online system and to gain an insight into the other modules involved in the upgrading of the IT System at the Customs Division. Information on the benefits of the system to the Division, stakeholders and clients, will also be highlighted.
The implementation of ASYCUDA World at Customs is a sub-project of the Grenada Technical Assistance Credit Project (GD TAC) which is jointly funded by the World Bank Group and the European Union (EU). The GD TAC, which was launched in Grenada on October 20th, 2009, is aimed at improving the environment for private sector led growth, through the modernization of key public sector institutions and the implementation of an export strategy. Specifically the GD TAC has the following objectives:
- Improving the efficiency and effectiveness of Customs;
- Improving the efficiency of tax administration through, among other things, a decrease in the transaction costs of paying taxes and consequently, an increase in tax compliance;
- Enhancing the Government’s support for exports through improving access to trade and information and strengthening the capacity of the Bureau of Standards to provide services related to conformity assessment and quality assurance; and
- Modernizing investment promotion.
