ST.GEORGE’S, GRENADA, 2 DECEMBER 2011_ Members of the Soubise Women’s Bee Keeping Cooperative have received a quantity of equipment to help them improve the handling of their hives.
The equipment was made available through the St. George’s University by members of a visiting delegation from the United States which included Dr. Jamie Ellis of the University of Florida, Dr. Jeffrey Pettis of the United States Department of Agriculture –Agriculture Research Services and Mr. G.W. Hayes of the State of Florida Department of Agriculture.
Speaking at a short ceremony in Soubise on Wednesday evening, Minister for Youth Empowerment and Sports, Hon. Patrick Simmonds congratulated the group on its work and challenged the members to take their vocation seriously.
“The fact is that this project can change your lives and can be a genuine source of income to you, your family and the community. It is important that you utilize and care for this equipment well,” Minister Simmonds told the members of the cooperative.
Mr. Simmonds and Minister for Social Development, Hon. Sylvester Quarless handed over the equipment in the presence of members of the visiting team and Mr. Dwayne Mitchell of the SGU East Caribbean Bee Research and Extension Center. Mr Mitchell is a Grenadian who has undertaken extensive research in bees and in honey production in Grenada.
