Hillsborough, Carriacou, August 30th, 2010- A festival symposium is being planned for residents of Carriacou and Petite Martinique as part of government’s ongoing attempts to develop and enhance culture nationwide.
In preparation for the symposium, scheduled for October 2 at the Carriacou Multipurpose Centre, a meeting was held with cultural enthusiasts on the island during a visit by Junior Culture Minister, Senator Arley Gill, and Dexter Mitchell, Chief Executive Officer of the Grenada Cultural Foundation (GCF).
Sen. Gill said it’s important to strive for better coordination of Carriacou and Petite Martinique’s four major festivals – Carnival, Maroon Music Festival, Regatta and Parang.
Plans are being made for the establishment of a Festival Commission to oversee and provide assistance to the various events’ organising committee, and the GCF is also seeking to set up a sub-office in Carriacou.
Meanwhile, Harrison Fleary – the representative of Carriacou and Petite Martinique on the Board of Directors of the GCF – has said that he would like the involvement of all groups to aid in the improvement and enhancement of the twin-parish’s cultural package.
The October 2 symposium is open to all persons interested in the development of culture in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
