Dr. Cecile La Grenade
Cécile La Grenade was born in La Borie, St. George’s, Grenada to Sibyl and Alan La Grenade. She received her primary education at St. Louis’s RC Girls School and her Secondary school education at St Joseph’s Convent St. Georges.
Upon leaving school, she was employed at the Ministry of Health as a Junior Laboratory technician, before proceeding on to the University Hospital of the West Indies where she pursued a Certificate in Medical Technology. Upon the successful completion, she returned to Grenada and continued her job at the Laboratory of the General Hospital, Ministry of Health.
In 1974 she was admitted to the UWI St Augustine campus, where she pursued a degree in Natural Science majoring in Chemistry and Biochemistry, graduating with Honours.
Following her graduation, she taught at Holy Faith Convent in Couva, Trinidad and returned to Grenada in 1979 to work at the Produce Chemist Laboratory with responsibility for Quality Control at the True Blue Agro Processing plant.
In January 1983 she was admitted to the University of Maryland, College Park to read for a Masters Degree in Food Science. Following the completion of her Master's Degree, she was accepted into the Doctoral Degree program at that same institution where she pursued and completed her Doctoral degree. She was employed at the US Food and Drug Administration before returning to Grenada in 1992 to manage the family business, following the tragic death of her mother Sibyl La Grenade, the matriarch and founder of de La Grenade Industries.
From 1992 to 2013 Dr. La Grenade became the Managing Director of De La Grenade Industries a company known for the production of high-quality value-added agro products primarily from nutmeg pods. In 2006 Dr. La Grenade became a member of Caribbean Export Development Agency’s Steering Committee, as the OECS Private Sector Representative From November 2007 to November 2010, Dr. La Grenade was the Chairman of the Public Service Commission in Grenada.
In 2010 Dr. La Grenade was awarded businesswoman of the Year by the Grenada Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
In April 2013, Dr. La Grenade was conferred with the title of Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St. George, by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
On May 7, 2013, Dame La Grenade was sworn in as the 6th Governor General of Grenada, becoming the first female to hold that office.
