George Wilbert Prime
Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs

Term of Appointment: July 9 2008 to present

 

George Wilbert Prime, the son of the late Walton and Rita Prime was born in the Netherlands of Aruba on May 30, 1953. He received his Elementary education from the Hillsborough Government School; and then went on to Presentation Brothers College where he received his secondary education.

Prime pursued a first degree in Economics and Public Administration at the University of London where he obtained a Bachelor of Art Degree (1977-1980). After completing his first degree Prime went to the Grenada High Commission as 1st Secretary.

In 1981, he was appointed as secretary for Carriacou & Petite Martinique under the People’s Revolutionary Government (PRG) until 1983. After the demise of the PRG, Prime worked as a consultant to several Non-Governmental Agencies and Co-operatives- CARINUT AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION COOPERATIVE was one of them, before returning to the United Kingdom to pursue a law degree.

He obtained a LLB Degree from the University of London followed by a postgraduate studies, leading to an LLM in Law and Social Policy at The Hague in Holland. Prime is also the holder of the Council of Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School. He was called to the Bars of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada in October of 1990.

From 1993-1995, he served as Magistrate of the Northern District and from 1995-2008 he was in private practice where he is the Principal of the Chambers of G.W. Prime & Co.

In 2003, he was appointed Senator and Leader of Opposition Business in the Senate. Prime is presently the Leader of Government Business in the Senate.

In the field of sports, Prime was a member of the Grenada Youth Cricket Team from 1972-1974 and a member of the Combined Windward and Leeward Islands Youth Cricket Team in 1972. He still plays cricket, taking part in friendly matches locally and also takes part and supports the annual swimming race at the Carriacou Regatta Festival.

Prime is the father of two (2) children, Kizzy and Kayode.
