Ministry of Health provides training for over 100 Primary Healthcare Providers

Tuesday April 22nd, 2008: Commencing tomorrow Wednesday April 23, more than 100 primary healthcare providers will participate in a two day training workshop organized by the Ministry of Health.

The workshop which is expected to bring together community health nurses, district nurses and community health aides, will be held at the National Stadium in St. George’s, where the primary healthcare providers are expected to be informed and taught the new trends in the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI).

Senior Community Health Nurse, Monica Mungo, explained that it is very important for the primary healthcare providers to be exposed to these new trends given the significant role they play at the community level. She said the Ministry of Health is cognizant of the fact that the nurses play an important role in the providing healthcare to the citizens of the country and as a result they took the lead role in organizing and providing the training for the nurses. “The Ministry must be given full marks and plenty credit because this workshop is very timely especially as we are observing vaccination week where the focus in on the children attending the clinics within the age range of 0-4 years and school children especially those who have attained the age of fourteen” explained Nurse Mungo.

The two day workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Beryl Irons, who is the Senior Immunization officer for the region with Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Caribbean Epidemiology Center (CAREC).

The workshop forms part of the week of activities in observance of Vaccination week which began on April 19 and ends on April 25.
